Position: Research Associate 1 (Transportation GIS Specialist), AAUP

Position Summary:

The Connecticut Transportation Safety Research Center (CTSRC) at the University of Connecticut operates within the School of Engineering. CTSRC is looking for two Research Associates to assist in the development of enterprise software for transportation systems in the state of Connecticut.  These positions will work closely with the Connecticut Department of Transportation to develop applications to query, visualize and analyze transportation related crashes or assets. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Confers with program director and project manager to resolve questions of program and project intent; output requirements; input data acquisition; extent of automatic programming and coding use and modification; and, inclusion of internal checks and controls.
  2. Contribute as a productive member of an agile development team.
  3. Analyze, design and implement business requirements.
  4. Design and implementation of data models.
  5. Integrating and testing with back end services and databases.
  6. Development and testing of software APIs.
  7. Development and testing of user interfaces.
  8. Profiling and optimizing system performance.
  9. Document all programming tasks and procedures.
  10. Perform routine software maintenance.
  11. Develop web applications based on users’ needs.
  12. Write effective and well documented code.
  13. Maintain and support application as requirement evolves.
  14. Work with other developers, database admins, and project managers in a fast moving development environment.
  15. Transform user requirements into highly functional user interfaces.
  16. Understand and implement security and data protection.
  17. Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. PhD in Computer programming, Transportation or GIS related field.
  2. Evidence of ability to independently analyze and translate assigned programs into operating programs and prepare detailed program documentation.
  3. Demonstrated ability in analytical reasoning and logical problem solving.
  4. Experience with at least one of the following: JavaScript, JavaScript Frameworks (e.g., Angular, React, Vue), Python, .NET Framework, .NET core, ASP.NET MVC, C#, or Java.
  5. Good written and oral communication skills.
  6. Self-motivated and eager to learn new programming skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. PhD degree with at least 3 years of experience
  2. Two or more years’ experience working in a team of developers to build an enterprise application.  
  3. Advanced knowledge in one or more of, ArcGIS and ArcGIS Server applications, SQL and SQL server, Java and Python, HTML, CSS and JavaScript, Angular, .NET Framework, ASP.NET MVC, or C#.
  4. Experience with Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) integration and development.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

These are full-time, 11-month positions based on available funding and subject to annual renewal. Salary will be commensurate with successful candidate's background and experience. Position: Administrative Services Assistant 3 (UCP 4)

Position Summary:

The Mechanical Engineering Department is seeking applicants for a full-time Administrative Services Assistant 3 (UCP 4) position with shared financial responsibilities as described below. The successful individual will coordinate the administrative and specific personnel functions in the Mechanical Engineering department as well as independently perform financial functions for the department with funding from private, state and federal grant and contract sources. Knowledge of grants and expenditure planning is essential, as is the administrative experience, the ability to prepare various narrative and informational reports; and perform other duties as required.

The successful candidate is expected to:

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Perform office administrative duties; direct the workflow and supervise the processing of administrative and personnel paperwork, including visas.
  2. Handle administrative matters for department faculty and the department head as assigned.
  3. Assemble and interpret data, prepare administrative reports and handle correspondence for the department head.
  4. Supervise, train and evaluate administrative support staff, such as student workers; determine their work assignments and work schedules, adjusting clerical assignments to accommodate priority needs; assist in determining staffing needs.
  5. Oversee the hiring of student workers in the ME office
  6. Serve as a resource to students, staff and faculty regarding University and departmental policies and regulations.
  7. Monitor and review all personnel actions for accuracy and compliance with department and University procedures and resolve related problems as they arise.
  8. Represent the department to other University and external offices and agencies in administrative matters that affect the operations of the department.
  9. Independently compose, prepare and/or edit standard correspondence and reports containing information that requires thorough knowledge of policies, procedures and data sources.
  10. As needed or assigned, may be responsible for special short term or ongoing projects that require

FINANCIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Maintains and monitors assigned grant and other account budgets; reviews transactions for accuracy, completeness and compliance with regulations, policies and procedures; monitors and approves expenditures; processes fiscal paperwork.
  2. Assists faculty Principal Investigators (Pl) for assigned grants with grant post award to monitor budget and ensure compliance with regulations and policies at the University, state and federal levels, as well as the requirement of the Sponsored Programs Services (SPS) and funding agencies.
  3. Record encumbrances and expenditures to process all necessary paperwork, which may include payroll records, purchasing, disbursements, graduate fellowship awards, and undergraduate research awards, following up to resolve problems as they arise.
  4. Balance selected accounts and compile monthly reports for the department head and the financial officer of the department.
  5. Maintain selected fiscal and payroll records, purchases and other disbursements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of training and experience; including at least four years of experience in a progressively responsible administrative support position.
  2. Demonstrated experience with financial record keeping
  3. Administrative, organizational and leadership skills
  4. Outstanding interpersonal skills with as well as oral and written communication skills with ability to work effectively with the department staff, the University community and other individuals and groups.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field.
  2. Knowledge of University financial (Kuali) and payroll systems, or of similar systems.
  3. Knowledge of grant and contracts administration
