Event: BME Seminar: Brain Microcircuits and Function in the Auditory System, presented by Dr. Douglas Oliver, Professor of Neuroscience

Location: ROWE 320, Videoconference to UCHC-Low Learning Center

Time: 12:00 pm

Details of Event:
The auditory system is the neural system we use to process information about sound. Our work is focus on the inferior colliculus, the midbrain hub of the auditory system through which all signals must pass in route to the cerebral cortex. Colliculus differs from most brain regions since it has parallel excitatory and inhibitory and outputs. We have discovered several new types of neurons in the colliculus that are highly specialized and differ in their synaptic inputs and outputs. This has led to insights about the specific brain microcircuits in the inferior colliculus. New experiments on the function of the synaptic inputs to the colliculus show interesting properties that may code for the timing the neural responses to sound.
