Dr. Sheehy’s work focuses on two areas related to organizing, representing, and querying geometric objects or data. The first is mesh generation. This field is concerned with finding discrete representations of smooth functions. The second is topological data analysis. This field generalizes many popular data analysis paradigms such as clustering or principle component analysis. The goal is to find not only the simple connectivity as in clustering, but also higher order connectivity such as cycles and holes. Another goal is to find the intrinsic shape underlying a data set even if that shape is highly nonlinear.
