Dr. Ivan’s research is focused on the statistical and mathematical modeling of transportation systems, with a special emphasis on road crash prediction. In particular he focuses on several main areas: (1) how the relationship between traffic volume and crash incidence varies from one collision type to another, (2) using GIS land use inventories to estimate traffic exposure for crash prediction on roads without traffic count data, (3) the role of the roadway and roadside environment in explaining vehicle and pedestrian crash incidence and vehicle speeds, and (4) observation and use of pedestrian-vehicle interactions at different severity levels for characterizing pedestrian safety of a road location.
