Professional Summary

One of the grand challenges that we face is to understand the mechanisms behind brain function and to identify the root causes of its disorders. The starting point in tackling these challenges is to map out the connections between neural cells, and identify critical factors that cause changes in these connections. To this end, Dr. Cho’s laboratory develops methods to visualize proteins in neural circuits, focusing on protein variants and modifications that are associated with neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s. His group also develops ways to manipulate neural circuits, such as controlling the electrical activity in neurons using ion channels activated by light.
