Alumni Association Honors Engineering Leaders

our community have been honored by the UConn Alumni Association for
outstanding contributions in philanthropy and research: alumnus T.
Scott Case (Computer Science '92) and Board of Trustees Professor
Yaakov Bar-Shalom. They are being feted at the UConn campus during gala

Campaign Honors Outstanding Profs
The School of Engineering has kicked off a new campaign aimed at
celebrating outstanding engineering professors. Called the Professors
Remembered scholarship initiative, the campaign allows alumni to make
donations in the name of a favorite emeritus or active professor whose
mentorship, powerful lessons or influence made a lasting difference in

NIH Supports Genomic Motif Research
Dr. Sanguthevar Rajasekaran, the UTC Chair Professor of Computer
Science & Engineering, and Dr. Reda Ammar, Head of the Computer
Science & Engineering Department, along with colleagues from the
University of Florida (Sartaj Sahni) and University of Nevada - Las
Vegas (Martin Schiller) received a $1.5 million grant in support of
research aimed at developing superior methods for identifying
biologically relevant patterns (also called motifs) present in
proteins, DNA and RNA. read

Startup Aided by Commercialization Experts
A startup company founded by three engineering faculty recently secured
nearly $500k in NSF phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR)
funds to take their novel underwater sensor network technology to the

Students Invest in Peers
UConn engineering students are recognized for their intellect, diverse

Nanoelectronics Team Awarded Grant
Drs. Ali Gokirmak and Helena Silva (Electrical & Computer
Engineering), who co-direct the Nanoelectronics Laboratory at UConn,
have received a large grant in support of research on the effects of
extreme electrical stress on current-induced crystallization of silicon
and thermoelectric transport in silicon nanostructures. read more
D.E. Crow Prize in Innovation and Entrepreneurship
David (Ed) Crow, former senior vice president of UTC Pratt &
Whitney and emeritus professor in residence at UConn, has established
the D.E. Crow Prize. read

Transportation Team Wows East Hampton Students
In early September, a team from UConn's Civil & Environmental
Engineering (CEE) Department conducted a fun and educational learning
activity for a group of 4th and 5th grade students at the East Hampton

Engineering's First Professor of Practice: David
Gilbertson
Engineering Dean Mun Y. Choi announced that David Gilbertson has been
selected as its first Professor of Practice. Mr. Gilbertson, an expert
in informatics, information security and management, joined UConn in
early 2010 as UConn's Associate Vice President and Chief Information

Max Villa: a Ph.D. candidate journeys across fields,
country
Max Villa (B.S., M.S., Ph.D. candidate) planned something special
between finishing his Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering and
starting his Ph.D. in Materials Science: a 4,300 mile, three month long
cross country bike ride from Yorktown, VA to Astoria, OR. read more
