New Appointments in Engineering
Dean Mun Choi recently announced the appointment of Dr. Jun-Hong ("June") Cui as Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies & Diversity. Dean Choi also announced an enlargement of duties for two other officers, Dr. Kazem Kazerounian for Associate Dean for Research & Strategic Initiatives, and Mr. Marty Wood for Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education & Diversity.

Joule Fellows Program Embeds Teachers in Research Labs
The School of Engineering launched a new teacher enrichment program over the summer, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), which immerses middle and high school teachers in the super-hot arena of energy research at the Storrs campus. The Joule Fellows Program is a five-week Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program that kicked off July 13th with the arrival of 11 teachers representing nine schools across Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Faculty Helping Ethiopia Develop Water Infrastructure
In April, a large multi-institutional team of researchers from UConn and Ethiopian universities was awarded a prestigious USAID/Higher Education for Development (HED) planning grant to support sustainable development and management of water resources in Ethiopia. UConn is committed to advancing hydrology studies and to bringing much-needed practical aid to regions of the globe where clean, plentiful water is scarce.

A Classroom without Borders
Many college students dream of making a difference in vulnerable communities around the world; many others fantasize about simply getting off campus for the summer and traveling to new and exciting lands. Members of the UConn chapter of Engineers without Borders (EWB) do both. This past summer, M.S. candidate Robert Yau, junior Christina Natale and Ph.D. candidate Menberu Bitew, traveled to Ethiopia with their advisor, Dr. Mekonnen Gebremichael for a reconnaissance mission in a small community by Lake Koka in South Central Ethiopia.

Guiling Wang Named Al Geib Professor
Dr. Guiling Wang, an associate professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) and Director of the Environmental Engineering Program, has been named the Al Geib Professor. Dean of Engineering Mun Y. Choi announced Dr. Wang's selection, saying "Dr. Wang's contributions are of enormous importance to our understanding of the interactions among climate, surface hydrology, vegetation and human activities.

Alpay Selected a UTC Professor in Engineering Innovation
Dr. S. Pamir Alpay, an associate professor in the Chemical, Materials & Biomolecular Engineering Department, was selected to receive a United Technologies Corporation (UTC) Professor in Engineering Innovation Award for his exceptional achievements in research, instruction and service. It is one of just five presented to faculty at the rank of assistant or associate professor across the School of Engineering.

UTC School of Engineering Building Rededicated,
Technology Partnership With UConn Revitalized
In 1987, the UTC School of Engineering building at the University of Connecticut was dedicated. The building was rededicated on Sept. 3rd with significant updates to the lobby highlighting UTC's products and services. It was the culmination of a year-long effort led by Pratt & Whitney's Engineering organization and joined by other UTC divisions.

Pennant Contest -- NASA Shuttle
UConn engineering alumnus and Connecticut native Richard Mastracchio (Electrical Engineering/Computer Science '82) will fly aboard the space shuttle Discovery in March 2010 on his third shuttle mission.
