“Shock Initiated Detonation in Nanoporous Energetic Materials”
Abstract: In this presentation, I will discuss several projects aimed toward building a predictive model of explosive performance. These efforts can be divided into three main topics: characterization of nanoscale heterogeneities, equation of state development using density functional theory (DFT), and parameterization of reaction models via novel diagnostics. I will discuss the culmination of these three areas in a set of experiments where the growth from inert shock to steady detonation was observed via photonic Doppler velocimetry (PDV). These small-scale experiments exploited unique vapor-deposited explosive films, which were characterized by ion-beam cross sectioning. A DFT-based equation of state and the measured microstructure are being used in a mesoscale hydrocode simulations of the entire experiment, with the ultimate goal of validating a continuum-scale model that can be used for detonator design.
Bio: Ryan R. Wixom is the Manager of the Nanostructure Physics Department within the Center for Integrated NanoTechnologies, which is a user facility jointly operated by Sandia National Laboratories and Los Alamos National Laboratory. His department houses capabilities and expertise in atomistic simulation, mesoscale modeling, nanomechanical testing, and in-situ characterization of nanomaterials. Dr. Wixom has an extensive background in modeling, simulation, and characterization of explosives and has developed novel techniques for: microstructural characterization, predicting equations of state, mesoscale hydrodynamic modeling, and utilizing photonic Doppler velocimetry as a diagnostic for small scale shock physics experiments. He is passionate about materials science and applying it’s fundamentals to help solve multidisciplinary problems. Ryan is active in the international energetic materials community, the Materials Research Society (MRS), and the American Physical Society (APS). He will serve as the Chair of the 2019 APS Shock Compression of Condensed Matter topical group meeting.
Dr. Wixom received a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Utah, where he studied the use of surfactants to control dopant incorporation during epitaxial growth of III-V semiconductors. After graduating, he joined Sandia as a postdoctoral researcher using density functional theory to study defects in semiconductors. He was subsequently hired into Sandia’s Explosives Technology Group, and shifted focus toward the characterization, modeling, and testing of explosive materials. In 2016, he was chosen to manage a multidisciplinary department of theorists and microscopists at the Center for Integrated NanoTechnologies.
