Dr. Timothy J. Bunning, a member of the Senior Executive Service, is the Chief Scientist of the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Air Force Materiel Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He received B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering from UConn. Dr. Bunning conducted his Ph.D. research, which was funded through an Air Force Office of Scientific Research doctoral fellowship, at Air Force facilities and went on to conduct a post-doc appointment at Cornell University before returning to WPAFB.

He is a Fellow of AFRL, the Optical Society (OSA), the Materials Research Society, the International Society of Optics and Photonics (SPIE), the American Physical Society, the American Chemical Society (ACS), the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering Division of ACS. He has co-authored more than 275 refereed papers and ~ 120 proceedings, has edited several books, and holds 18 patents. He has presented hundreds of invited presentations, colloquia, and seminars, and his team’s research efforts have been highlighted in many professional settings. His numerous awards include the 2002 John H. Dillon Medal awarded by the Division of Polymer Physics, American Physical Society; the 62nd Arthur S. Flemming (DoD) Award; the AF John L. McLucas Basic Science STEM award, and the American Chemical Society 2013 PMSE Co-Operative Research Award. He is currently an adjunct professor in the MSE Department, Georgia Tech, is on the editorial boards of several journals, and serves on the advisory boards of numerous organizations.
