The set of lecture notes web pages is not intended to teach ML or to be a substitute for the lectures. The book (Ullman's Elements of ML Programming) presents the language far better than I do. I don't often follow my lecture notes when I present a lecture, so I wouldn't recommend missing a class on account of the web pages.
