TRMM - GROUND RADAR CALIBRATION PROJECT

Funded by NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), this project seeks to investigate the adequacy of TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR) for calibrating ground based volume scanning weather radar reflectivity measurements. The research involves development of an automated scheme for storm case selection, interpolation of PR and ground-based radar data to a fixed 3D earth parallel grid centered on the radar site, and statistical analysis to derive ground-based radar calibration adjustment coefficients. The current interest is on selected US and international radar sites, though, the methodology can be extended to any radar site located within the 35 degrees north and south latitudinal extend of the PR coverage.
