CE 254 - HIGHWAY DESIGN PROJECT - SPRING 2000

NORTH HILLSIDE ROAD at UCONN

BACKGROUND

The master plan for the University of Connecticut has earmarked 333 acres to the north of the campus for the development of a technology-research neighborhood (see the UCONN Advance, March 6, 2000). This site is expected to be developed as a vibrant mixed use environment including research facilities, apartment style student housing (up to 1200 beds), athletic facilities (inculding baseball, football and soccer fields), and possibly, a faculty retreat center, nature center and neighbourhood retail. A complete network of pedestrian paths and bikeways are expected to be developed as part of this plan. The plan also calls for the preservation of much of the area for environmental and aesthetic reasons and for recreational uses.

The purpose of this project is the design of North Hillside Rd which will serve as the main access road to this north campus area and to relieve the traffic pressure on Route 195. North Hillside Rd extends from North Eagleville Rd in the south to Route 44 (in the vicinity of the A&P Plaza – half of this road already exist, however, for this project you should develop a completely new design for the full extent of the road). Your design should be consistent with the stated goals of the master plan and the potential future use of the site. A topographic map (scale: 1" to 400 ft, contour interval 5 ft) of the project site is provided.

DESIGN CONTROLS

The AADT for the proposed road is projected to be 1500 vpd in 2001 (assume a 1% growth rate over the 20 years design life of the project). The endpoints of the route are i) on Route 44 near the A&P Plaza, ii) on North Eagleville Road just east of the UCONN fire station.

DESIGN REPORT

Your report should contain the following

  1. Project Background
  2. Description of Site: Purpose of Project: Description of Future Roadside Environment: Description of Users of the Road and the Environs: Your Goals for the Design.
  3. Functional Classification
  4. Determine the functional classification and explain the basis for your choice.
  5. Selection of Design Parameters
  1. Vertical and Horizontal Alignment
  1. Overview of Design

Give a brief overview of your final design and explanation how this design achieve the goals that you outlined in A above.
