The meeting minutes from the 20 May 01 TC meeting were reviewed. A motion was
made to accept the minutes, seconded and approved.
Discussion of Members Emeritus
Dean Jorgensen recommended formalizing the
member emeritus status of several TC past members. It was mentioned that the status
would be for past members who have contributed much to the TC and should be
recognized and honored for those contributions. Dean Jorgensen then volunteered to lead
the ad hoc committee to form member emeritus list and presentation of certificates.
Treasurer's Report
Rich Benney gave details of finances from the 2001 conference.
Account balance was $13,252.35. AAAF has paid their debt and all 2001 conference
financial matters were settled.
Ideas were discussed regarding the spending of the committee funds. Design
competitions (Rich Benney mentioned that AIAA has a formal process if we are
interested), outreach to students (paid expenses to the AIAA ADS conference and
presentation of winning paper to the plenary session), and self administered scholarships
were all discussed. The final proposal was for two $1500 student scholarships for the
Heinrich short course. Dean Jorgensen proposed a scholarship team to handle this
activity. The motion was seconded and approved. Rich Benney volunteered as lead with
Dean Jorgensen and Tom Rivellini as team members. The "ADS scholarship" was
proposed as a possible name.
Homepage Team –
Roy Haggard stated that "aerodecelerator.org" was functional. The
short course was added to the website.
Database Team –
Rich Benney had sent several CDs to LHL, but his summer help was
gone. No other updates were made. It was reiterated that the committee has an open
invitation to LHL for TC meetings.
Newsletter Team –
A proposal was made to discontinue the newsletter and replace it by
adding articles to the website. Glen Brown took an action to contact Chris Hailey about
this.
Specifications and Standards –
The specs and standards document was approved and
distributed at the 2001 conference. Glen Brown discussed the possible establishment of
of a standard method of reporting (definitions, variables, etc.), but no action was taken.

Awards Team
Nominations packages are due summer 2002. Ken Sego volunteered to
be POC to receive nomination packages. The honors and awards links are on the
AIAA.org website.
2001 Conference Wrap-up
Scott Delicker was not present to provide wrap-up, but
committee discussed possible presentations at next GN&C conference, but Dean
Jorgensen strongly recommended against fearing that the audience would not be interested
in "updates" of what we introduced to them at the last conference.
Glen Brown proposed Tom Rivellini determine interest in inflatables, supersonic,
etc for other TC conferences.
2003 Conference
The three proposed sites were the following:
Tucson- Mark Heflin provided a package for Tucson and possible banquet at the
Pima Air Museum hanger. Pros:: Mark could be "local" admin rep Cons: weather, lack
of local attractions, not easily accessible.
Seattle- Pros: Cosmopolitan international city, many attractions, easy access,
cultural. Cons: Possible lack of "local" admin person
Monterey- Rick Howard presented a detailed interesting (and convincing!) brief
on Monterey CA. Pros: facilities, Rick could be "local" admin rep Cons: not easily
accessible.
A vote of the present members resulted in a unanimous vote for Monterey CA for the
2003 ADS conference.
Tony Taylor had volunteered to play a role in the technical aspects of the
conference and Dean Jorgensen nominated him for general chairman. Debbie Gardinier
seconded the motion. Rick Howard was nominated to act as administrative lead.
Seminar topics: Ken Heindel "volunteered" to investigate "advanced ADS materials" as
a possible subject for the seminar. Ken requested all to e-mail him with suggestions.
Roy Haggard called for a "Greatest ADS mishaps" video for showing at the end
of the conference. He volunteered to consolidate the clips and present it.
Next meeting –
Ken Heindel volunteered to host the next TC meeting at Colemnan
Research Corporation in Orlando FL on 5 Feb 02. The meeting adjourned to off-line
discussions.
MEMORANDUM
To: Glen Brown, Chair AIAA ADS-TC
From: Jean Potvin, Director, Heinrich Parachute Systems Short Course
Date: 10-16-01
Re: Status Report
As you know, the course is to be held at Saint Louis University, in St. Louis, MO, May
20-24, 2002. Here is a list of the recent activities and events that have taken place in the
recent past:
1) For the past two months or so, web pages featuring the description of the course, a
description of the venue, and sample registration forms have been set up on the
ADS-
TC web site. See http://www.engr.uconn.edu/-adstc/shortcourses.html
2) As of Oct 16 people have registered (15 paid) or have pledged to register (11).
3) The breakeven number of participants is 32, using the same tuition rate as in 1998,
i e $1,100 per participant. The increase in cost due to inflation will be compensated
by the financial support of, and facilities provided by Saint Louis University.
4) Most of the instructors will be the same as in the 1998 course: Behr (probable),
Doherr, Lingard and Wolf Bill Gerrard has pledged his help if needed. Dr. Potvin
may also become an instructor, if needed.
5) The syllabus will be mostly the same as with the 1998 course.
6) Visa applications are currently being processed for Lingard and Doherr.
7) One e-mail advertisement was sent out by Dr. Accorsi at the end of August. Another
one will follow in March 2002. If the breakeven point is reached before January
2002,
the planned mass-mailing of a paper-based flyer will be cancelled, as well as the
March 2002 e-mail ad.
One lingering issue is the splitting of the "profits" between the two co-sponsors of the
course (ADS-TC and Saint Louis University (SLU)). The TC needs to provide this
course director with some guidance on what to tell SLU officials.
First, some background information. SLU has pledged the following support:
Use of classroom and audiovisual equipment, free of charge. This was a
$1,150.00 expense in 1998.
Lecture notes reproduction, a $2,321.45 expense in 1998.
Use of SLU staff, free of charge.
Free mailing and telephone use (for administrative purposes), a $660.00 expense in 1998.
In 1998 the University of Minnesota and the ADS-TC took each 50% of the profits. This
course director suggests that the TC and SLU split the profits (or deficit) on that
same 50-50 basis. In his opinion such a split is fair to both parties, given the level of
support provided by each co-sponsor (It is my understanding that level of support
provided by SLU is significantly higher than the support provided by the University of
Minnesota in 1998).
