Minutes of a Meeting of the AIAA Aerodynamic Decelerator Systems
Technical Committee
Boston Park Plaza Hotel
Boston, Massachusetts
May 20, 2001
General
A meeting of the AIAA ADS Technical Committee was convened at 1:00 p.m. on
May 20, 2001 in conjunction with the AIAA Aerodynamic Decelerator Systems
Technology Conference. Those in attendance are listed below. Richard Benney
chaired the meeting.
The Technical Committee is currently at its member limit of 35 members.
Richard Benney has offered to act as the Technical Committee Treasurer. Mr.
Benney proposes that the technical committee's financial details, including
account balance, be maintained on the Technical Committee web site. Two
signatures will be required on each check. Mo Gionfriddo, Mike Accorsi, and
Richard Benney will comprise the signing group.
1. Review of the minutes.
- The meeting minutes from the January 29, 2001 TC meeting were
reviewed. Several typographical errors were noted and redlined.
- A motion to accept the minutes as corrected was made, seconded
and approved at 1:12 p.m.
2. Treasurer's Report.
- As of April 30, 2001 the TC account balance was $16, 314.73.
- Jean Franscois will be paying an estimated debt of $2,500. The
bank has been unable to accept their wire transfer efforts.
3. ADS Conference Report.
- Scott Dellicker presented the ADS Conference Report. There are
110 pre-registered attendees for the seminar. It was noted that the
conference application form allowed signing up for the "Full
Conference," which did not include the seminar costs. Better
clarification of seminar costs will be included on the form next year.
4. Conference Setup Discussion.
- Due to the possibility that AIAA may change personnel and
information may not be communicated properly, it is important to
maintain personal requirement notes.
- Session Chairs will remind the newer speakers of the time and
location of the "Speakers Breakfast." The current tentative location
is the St. James Room, 4th floor, Boston Park Hotel.
5. Seminar Report.
- Rob Meyerson, Seminar Chairman, presented the Seminar Report.
- There are 46 pre-registered attendees for the Advanced Sensor
Technologies Seminar.
- Storage of extra seminar materials was discussed. Richard
Benney suggested that this would be the responsibility of the
chairman.
- None of the speakers were interested in royalties. Two of the three
did copyright their material.
- A topic for the next conference seminar needs to be decided in
approximately one year.
- Rob Meyerson pointed out that hotel charges for the conference
rooms and food can be surprisingly high.
6. Current Conference Status.
- The target for conference papers was 66 papers (6 papers per
each of the 11 sessions). Seventy-one papers were accepted.
Twelve papers were dropped. Six papers were added and the
count now is 65 papers.
- The Session Chairman's job is to ensure that their authors
understand the importance of timely submission so that their paper
can be included in the bound volume. Corporate and government
approval times can be lengthy.
- The Session Chairman will brief the speakers at the Speakers
Breakfast. Standard timing is 20 minutes for the talk, 5 minutes for
questions, and 5 minutes to breakdown and setup for the next talk.
It is the speaker's responsibility to ensure that their audiovisual
setup is functional prior to their start time.
- Chairs should inform their session authors of any cancellations.
7. Industry Reception Discussion.
- The time of the reception is 6:30 p.m. May 22, 2001.
- Rich Benney will introduce each sponsor.
- Business casual dress (no tie).
- Further discussion was held regarding conference schedule errata,
awards banquet, and TC dinner role.
TEAM UPDATES
1. Homepage Team.
- Mike Accorsi will remove this year's conference information off the
website and insert a placeholder.
- Motion was made to adopt either "aerodecelerator.com" or .org.
The motion was seconded and passed. Roy Haggard will check
the availability of both extensions and will work with Mike Accorsi to
facilitate the change.
- Mike Accorsi suggests that individuals publish their own papers.
Working through the AIAA formal review process was extremely
inconvenient and communication was poor.
- E-mail distribution list update: Please keep Michael Accorsi
informed as to your current e-mail address, along with the
addresses of industry members that should be notified of the ADS
group's activities.
- AIAA/PIA list has not been obtained yet as an electronic format.
Scott Dellicker will talk to Bruno about obtaining the PIA list via the
AIAA.
2. Database Team.
- Karl Doherr was acknowledged as the main contributor.
- The Linda Hall Library is the official curator for the AIAA. Their
service is free and they guarantee 24-hour delivery of any
requested report that they have. Mo Gionfriddo researched the
issue of the limited distribution of Sandia Labs' older reports that
were limited distribution and that are now unlimited. Mo will e-mail
Rich Benney with the details and his contact at DTIC. A request
will be made to perform a blanket search for a range of ADS paper
numbers.
- AIAA has changed their search engine and it now no longer
accepts searches by subject or author's names, which is
unacceptable.
3. Specification and Standards.
- Jim French, AIAA, is reworking the Specification and Standards
document and may be able to hand out copies at the conference.
The current version is endorsed by the ADS, and is available on the
ADS website in PDF format.
4. Short Course Update.
- The target date for the short course is May 3rd or 4th, 2002 at St.
Louis University. Jean Potvin will advertise via e-mail, web site and
possibly Aerospace America. The cost is targeted around $1,200,
but will be evaluated. The contents of the course will be similar to
the last short course offered. A maximum of 50 enrollments has
been established. Current participation count within the TC was
just short of 40 enrollees. The conclusion is that little effort will be
required to sell the remaining slots. It was mentioned that 132
participants attended the "Theo Knacke" Short Course in 1989.
Jean would like to hand out a pin with the AIAA ADS logo for
attending the course. Jean would also like to continue to use the
"Heinrich Short Course" subject for approval by Bill Garrard. The
preferred hotel to hold the course is the Hampton Inn.
Arrangements will be made for suites on campus for ADS
members.
5. Congressional Visit Day.
- The ADS group will have up to four representatives for the
Congressional Day Visit. The TC should concur with the content of
the hand out to be distributed. A schedule for hand out completion
and review will be established. The visit is a two-day event in
March 2002.
- Dr. Phil Hattis, Draper Labs, attended this year's visit. AIAA
arranges meetings with the appropriate Congressman's staffer. Mo
Gionfriddo points out that at the end of the meeting, the staffer will
ask, "What can I do for you
- " Have an answer! How do we as a
technical committee come to a collective answer that benefits the
TC as a group without specifically benefiting individual members
-
The AIAA hosts a dinner with many Congressmen present.
6. Theo Knacke Scholarship.
- Bill Garrard proposed raising $20,000 to provide a $2,000
scholarship and/or a fellowship. An alternative proposal is to offer a
student $1,000 for travel and free admission to the short course.
This issue was discussed with the tentative conclusion that we will
raise the money.
- The contact at AIAA for this activity is Ray Chattman, 703-264-
7630; ray@aiaa.org.
- AIAA Technical Committee needs to establish a spending
procedure.
- Award Recipient will become honorary members.
7. Past Actions Review.
- ADS Charter: AIAA requires that we have a charter. Rich Benney
created a draft charter. Glen Brown will review and make
recommendations.
8. Current Actions.
- Aerospace America needs our POC for the Year In Review article.
We now have two pages available for text and two pictures.
9. Miscellaneous.
- The next Technical Committee meeting date was proposed as
October 23 and 24, 2001, with alternate dates of one week earlier,
October 16 and 17, 2001.
