AIAA ADS TC Meeting Minutes
Minutes of a Meeting of the AIAA Aerodynamic Decelerator
Systems Technical Committee
Coleman Research Corp
Orlando, Florida
5 February 2002
General
-
A meeting of the AIAA ADS TC was convened at Coleman Research Corp. (CRC) on 5 Feb 02 at 0900.
The meeting facilitator was Mr. Tony Taylor who substituted for Mr. Glen Brown (ADS TC Chairman).
Attendee's are listed below the minutes. Richard Benney acted as secretary pro tem.
Welcome by Coleman Research Corp
-
Mr. Barnet Warren (CRC) provided the AIAA ADS TC an overview of Coleman Research Corp.
This included a top-level view of capabilities and current programs.
Acceptance of Previous meeting minutes
-
The meeting minutes from the 23 October 01 ADS TC meeting were reviewed.
A motion was made to accept the minutes with minor modifications that was
seconded and approved. The minutes will be posted on the ADS TC website.
TC Roster
-
A list of the ADS TC roster was provided to all attendee's and reviewed.
A few names were missing (Jim Strickland and Tom Rivellini as examples) and a few
typos were noted on addresses (this appeared to be a Microsoft "Access" issue as some
addresses were not linked to the correct TC members). The full current roster was being
submitted to AIAA ADS TC for formal acceptance. The exact final membership count was not
determined at the meeting but it was determined that the ADS TC is NOT exceeding the allowable
limit (35 not counting foreign or young (under 35 years of age) members). Discussions regarding
formalizing the member emeritus status of several long-term TC members was briefly discussed but
deemed not relevant at this time as the total roster does not exceed the AIAA limits.
Treasurer's Report
-
Rich Benney gave details of finances. Account balance was $13,252.35 and unchanged
since the last ADS TC meeting (i.e. no financial actions took place). With the transfer
of the ADS TC account to Sovereign Bank of New England (due to a Bank merger) over 1.5
years ago, the ADS TC checks only require a single signature. Mo Gionfriddo and Richard
Benney agreed to travel to the Bank and get a dual signature requirement established as
agreed to by the ADS TC membership upon setting up the account.
Homepage Team
-
The new ADS TC website address is fully established (thanks to Roy Haggard (Vertigo))
at "www.aerodecelerator.org". The short course was added to the website and contains
details and on-line registration. Dr. Accorsi provided a handout that updated the status
of the website. New members and some current members were encouraged to maintain and
update their Bio-page. New images were also requested as the image page contains relatively
old images. Dr. Accorsi also maintains the ADS TC Email list that is not considered
to be close to a complete list of the interested community. All members agreed the need
to populate the list to reach a wider audience. This list is used to announce the short
course, seminars, conferences and other ADS TC information. All members of the ADS TC were
encouraged to send email addresses from their "contacts lists" to Dr. Accorsi for inclusion
in the ADS TC email master list.
Database Team
-
No new deposits or updates to the Linda Hall Library (LHL) ADS technical paper
collections were made since the last meeting. It was reiterated that the committee
has an open invitation to LHL for future TC meetings. Discussions regarding "limited
distribution" material took place. Mr. Gionfriddo has found a DTIC POC who can determine
if the restriction has been removed or can assist in getting it removed when applicable.
This has been one of the primary difficulties in getting the WPAFB (now at Sandia) shipped
to the LHL. Mr. Gionfriddo agreed to send this information to Dr. Peterson (Sandia). Dr.
Peterson agreed to look into this capability and try to regenerate movement towards
getting this collection (the largest deposit known to the ADS TC) to the LHL. Mr. Gionfriddo
also agreed to look into a more direct link to the ADS related collection for inclusion to
the ADS TC webpage that currently links to the LHL main page.
Newsletter Team
-
During the October ADS TC meeting, a proposal was made to discontinue the
newsletter and replace it by adding articles to the website. Glen Brown took an
action to contact Chris Hailey about this during the October meeting. It was unclear
where this issue stood. Webpage articles are encouraged by all ADS TC members for
review and inclusion on the website.
Specifications and Standards
-
The specs and standards document was approved and distributed at the 2001 conference.
Glen Brown discussed the possible establishment of a standard method of reporting
(definitions, variables, etc.), but no action was taken at the last TC meeting.
A clarification was submitted to the ADS TC regarding variables and definitions.
A discussion on this included a variety of ideas to include: agreeing to variables
and definitions and keeping them consistent at the Short Course. In addition, Mr. Benney
took the action to determine the status of the International Testing Operation Procedures (ITOP)
that, it is believed, has published "definitions" for the community to use for testing by all.
The TC agreed to revisit this subject at the next TC meeting. The TC also discussed getting
other common (non-copy written) material on the website. Mr. Hogue agreed to convert
the 1978 "yellow" ADS handbook into PDF format if a good copy could be provided to him and
to submit it to the LHL also.
Short Course Update
-
Dr. Potvin submitted a written report with the current number of POC's that
have signed up for the course. The numbers stood at 31 registered POC's as of
Jan 29th 2002. Another 11 POC's have pledged to register. 32 participants is the
break-even point. Mr. Benney updated the status of the ADS TC scholarship for the
short course. The scholarship was announced via the TC email list and is posted on
the website. The ADS TC agreed to offer two $1500 student scholarships for the Heinrich
short course which will include tuition ($1100) and up to $400 for travel and expenses.
At the time of the meeting, no applications have been received. All ADS TC members were
encouraged to announce these scholarships to their academic partners.
Awards Team
-
No formal Awards Team presentation was made. Nominations packages for the Theo Knacke
Award are due during the summer of 2002. Ken Sego had volunteered to be the POC to receive
nomination packages but an update on progress and/or new awards was not available at the
meeting. The honors and awards links for past recipients are on the ADS TC website and the
AIAA nomination package requirements are on the www.AIAA.org website. Only one nomination
is prepared and ready for consideration. A number of potential nominee's were brainstormed
and all ADC TC members were encouraged to pursue this activity vigorously. No actions were
taken to get additional nomination packages submitted.
CVD (Congressional Visits Day)
-
Mr. Gionfriddo discussed conversations that were on-going with Bruno Kisala (AIAA Headquarters)
from AIAA to include the Parachute Industry Association (PIA) at the next CVD
(scheduled for 20-21 March 2002) as part of the ADS TC delegation. The AIAA has approved
inclusion of the PIA if the ADS TC agrees. Mr. Gionfriddo has been supported by the PIA to
attend previous CVD's. Likely participants to this year CVD include Mr. Gionfriddo,
Irvin Aerospace, and Pioneer Aerospace. Vertigo Inc. stated a possibility but was not
prepared to commit. The ADS TC color two page handout used at the last CVD was distributed
for comment. Many comments and potential changes were discussed but no action or lead was
defined. As with the last year's flyer, the participants will develop the CVD flyer with
consideration given to be careful not to contradict the ADS TC's opinions. The CVD participants
were asked to submitting a draft to all TC members to review prior to printing. Any new "bullets"
desired by TC members should be submitted to Candy Mosby at Vertigo Inc.

2003 Conference
-
The 17th ADS Seminar and Conference will be held in Monterey California in May 2003.
The planned week (to be confirmed through AIAA and with the desired hotel(s)) will be May 19-23 2003.
Mr. Bruno Kisala was connected for these discussions via a telecon.
-
The key ADS TC organizing members will be:
Mr. Tony Taylor (General Chairman)
Dr. Rick Howard (probable Administrative Chair)
Dr. Michael Accorsi (Technical Chair)
Mr. Ken Hiendel (Seminar Chair)
-
A draft call for papers was distributed to TC members for review/comment.
Key "draft" dates will include:
Abstract Deadline: Oct 1 2002
Acceptance Notification: Nov 17 2002
Print ready papers to AIAA: Mar 9 2003
-
Seminar topics: Ken Heindel "volunteered" to investigate "advanced ADS materials"
at the last ADS TC meeting and is investigating potential lecturers with a few leads.
Input to the seminar and/or potential presenters should be sent to Mr. Hiendel.
Mr. Hiendel is talking with Balley Ribbon Mills and Dupont POC's. The goal is to have
an engineering focus versus a Theoretical focus.
-
Mr. Haggard called for a "Greatest ADS mishaps" video for showing at the end of
the conference. He volunteered to consolidate the clips and present this. Video
clips of (NON-personnel) failures should be sent to Mr. Haggard.
-
A discussion of the advantages/disadvantages of bound proceedings vs CDRom's
took place with limited agreement and was shelved for the next TC meeting.
In addition, the TC discussed reshaping the usual format by potentially including
a final plenary session.
