UCMA Events of 2006

 

November 28th, 2006- Amber Bl= ack and Sarah Zimmerman take the demos to a science class.

 

October 23rd, 2006- Amber Bl= ack, Jessica DeMartino and Julie Anne Mackey bring t= he road show to Middletown High School for the= ir annual MOLE day celebration.

 

September 18th, 2006- The Fall General Open House has a tour that shows high school students the opportuni= ties MSE has to offer.

 

May 9th, 2006- The annual student speaking contest sponso= red by the ASM Hartford Chapter was held at Willington Pizza House. Eight gradu= ate students spoke about their current research and the top three were invited = to compete and speak in front of our fellow ASMers= from industry. Congratulations to our three winners who received cash prizes from the Hartford Chapter:

1st Place: Will Osborn ($150)

2nd Place: Rob= in Bright ($100)

3rd Place: Nea= l Magdefrau ($50)

 

May 8th, 2006- Neal Magde= frau and Robin Bright traveled to Ridgefield High School to pres= ent our “Materials Road Show” to local high school students. Those students who scored in the top 25 on our “Materials Quiz” recei= ved specially designed t-shirts. Two 45

minute presentations were performed for about 70 stude= nts and teachers.

 

April 19th, 2006- Neal Magdefrau prese= nted materials demos at the Connecticut Invention Convention along with 3 professors from the Materials Science and Engineering Department. This even= t is held at UConn annually for middle school-aged k= ids who aspire to be inventors and engineers.

 

April 27-28th, 2006- Neal Magdefrau, R= obin Bright, Will Osborn, Amber Black, Misael Manjarres and Ning Shi tr= aveled to Hartford, CT for the CPTV Family Science Expo= . Our “Materials Road Show” was presented for two straight days a= nd was very well

received.

 

April 13th, 2006- Neal Magdefrau and W= ill Osborn traveled to Far= mington High School = as part of our “Materials Quiz” outreach initiative. Students who scored in the top 25 on our quiz were awarded t-shirts and our “Mater= ials Road Show” was performed for 2 class

periods.

 

April 12th, 2006- Robin Bright and Will Osborn gave tours of our facilities to Dr. Lance Haworth, acting director of Division of Materials Research for the National Science Foundation (NSF).

 

April 8th, 2006- Robin Bright, Will Osborn and Neal Magdefrau volunteered to give tours for UConn’s Spring Open House. Tours were given to seniors in high school intereste= d

in Materials Science and Engineering. Materials demos = were also presented to help

interest and educate students and their parents.

 

April 7th, 2006- Amber Black presented our “Materials Road Show” demos at the “Multiply Your Options” Fair. T= his event is for 8th grade girls and is sponsored by UConn’s School of Engineeri= ng to interest young girls in science and engineering.

 

March 30th, 2006- Our Materials Advantage Chapter was the recipien= t of one of five ASM Outreach Awards. These grants are $800 each and are given to the most unique and promising proposals for outreach in the field = of Materials Science. (March 30, 2006)

 

March 29th, 2006- Will Osborn, Robin Bright and Neal Magdefrau traveled to University High School in Hartford, CT to present our “Materials Road Show”. This high school was of particular interest because it is a science and engineering magnet school which was just started 2 years ago. The demos were very well received as usual.

 

March 28-29th, 2006- Materials Advantage vice president, Amber Bla= ck, traveled to Washington D.C. for “Congressional Visit Days”. She met with members of Congress and other government agencies. The goal of these visitation days is to discuss the importance of supporting research and development in the field of materials science and

engineering.

 

March 18th, 2006- Neal Magdefrau and A= mber Black presented materials demos at the “Northeast Science BowlR= 21; held on the UConn campus. This Science Bowl was the regional section of the National Science Bowl competition. Nearly 20 studen= ts chose to watch our “Materials Road Show” in their free time bet= ween tests.

 

March 15th, 2006- Chris Gatto, Robin B= right and Amber Black presented our “Materials Road Show” at E.O. Smith High School. E.O. Smith was one of the 5 schools to respond to our “Materials Quiz” and the top students were awarded t-shirts.

 

February 16th, 2006- Materials Advantage Officers and chapter advisor= (Rampi Ramprasad) met with= Fred Schmidt, member of the ASM/TMS Board of Trustees. Dr. Schmidt discussed our role as chapter leaders and how we can further improve our participation and enrollment.

 

February 9th, 2006 Undergraduate scholarship award winners were announced. These scholarships for the amount= of $1000 each are awarded to 2 undergraduates each year and are sponsored by t= he ASM Hartford and Southern Connecticut ASM Chapters.
