UCMA Events of 2005

 

December 15th, 2005- Neal Magdefrau and R= obin Bright traveled to Sacred Heart Middle School in New Britain, CT<= /st1:place> to present our “Materials Road Show”. This was the first middle school visited by our chapter this year.

 

November 21st, 2005- = Robin Bright and Neal Magdefrau traveled to Middletown= High School to perform = our “Materials Road Show” as part of their “Science Day”= ;. These demos were performed for 3 class periods of about 50 kids each.

 

November 18th, 2005- Our Materials Advantage Chapter officers (Neal, Stephanie, Robin, Chris) met with UConn’s Institute of Materials Science Advisory Board. This meeting was to g= ive insight and input into the possible merging of the Chemical and Materials Science and Engineering Departments.

 

November 10th, 2005- Stephanie Higgins, Chris Ga= tto, Robin Bright and Neal Magdefrau traveled to = Tolland Public Library to present our “Materials Road Show”. This presentation was well attended with over 50 kids and parents. The ages of k= ids attending ranged from 3-18 years old. The show was followed by a question a= nd answer period which the parents found especially informative.

 

November 8th, 2005- Eight UConn students attended ASM Hartford’s “Internship Night” where students are invited to come and meet members of industry about obtaining an internship position for the summer. UConn MSE undergraduate Kevin Rankin gave a talk about his previous summer internship= .

 

October 28th, 2005- The Materials Advantage Chapter teamed up with t= he Society of Plastic Engineers to sponsor a Halloween Party for both graduate= and undergraduate students. Over 30 students attended the event.

 

October 28th, 2005- Neal Magdefrau and Materials Advantage advisor Rampi Ramprasad visited Ellington<= /st1:PlaceName> High School = to give our “Materials Road Show” demos. Ellington was

Neal’s old high school which he has been returning to each year to give materials<= /p>

demos. Ellington High School was als= o one of the five schools which responded to

our “Materials Quiz” and were awarded t-sh= irts.

 

September 28th, 2005- The annual “Welcome Pizza Party” = was held to welcome back old students from the summer break as well as welcoming new students to the department. This event kicks of the school year and alw= ays brings out graduates, undergraduates and faculty members. Over 50 people attended this year and the meeting concluded with the voting and announceme= nt of new officers.

 

September 25th-28th, 2005- Materials Advantage member and p= ast chair Chandrasekhar Kothapalli attended the MS&= amp;T Conference in Pittsburgh, PA.

 

September 14th, 2005- Materials Advantage student members Robin Bright, Neal Magdefrau and Chris H= ugill took part in the ASM Hartford Annual Golf Tournament. This tournamen= t is played each year to help raise money for undergraduate scholarships. This w= as an excellent opportunity to meet members of industry and show our thanks for ASM Hartford’s dedication to our students.

 

September 12-13th, 2005- UConn’s School of Engineering Fall Open H= ouse for incoming freshman in engineering was held. Over 15 Materials Advantage memb= ers volunteered to help give tours and materials demos. The two day long event = was aimed to educate undecided engineering majors about the different career opportunities in Materials Science and Engineering.

 

August 24th, 2005- Our Materials Advantage Chapter has just learned that it is the recipient of the TMS Student World Materials Day Outreach Contest. This award has been won by our chapter numerous times including 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005.

 

July 2005- Chapter members participated in the Engineering 2K Program. This program which is organized by the School of Engineeri= ng is designed to present hands-on

demonstrations to 50 high school students who were awa= rded with scholarships.

These students were invited to participate in a one week on-campus program to lea= rn

different engineering disciplines.

 

June 2005- Chapter members assisted in teaching materials science to high sc= hool teachers who participated in the Da V= inci Project. This was a one-week workshop organized by the School of Engineeri= ng at UConn with the aim of introducing engineering fundamentals to math and science teachers so that the teachers can integrate core engineering concepts into their curricula at middle and high schools. = (June 2005)
