In the fall we were contacted by Middletown High School about participating in the MOLE day celebration. They asked us to do our general “road show” presentation which includes mostly physics and phase transformation demonstrations. These include a set of liquid nitrogen demos, YBCO superconductor, shape memory alloys, metallic glass, a space shuttle tile and other demos that show examples of the three basic classes of materials. In addition, we have been asked to do presentations at: the CT Invention Convention, the CT Public Television Science Expo, the Northeast Regional Science Bowl, and the CT Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. High schools and middle schools especially love to ask us to come do demonstrations for their classes.
Outreach Commitee Chair is an extremely important position to this organization. Through volunteer work, we as students and members of UCMA are able to give back to not only the School of Engineering, but the community at large. The School of Engineering provides us with so many wonderful opportunities as undergraduate and graduate students. It is important to show appreciation for all that is provided. As Outreach Chair, one of my main goals is concentrated in giving back to the School of Engineering and encouraging 100% participation by members. Participation in such events as Open House, MYO, Science Bowl, E2K, Bridge, Invention Convention, CPTV, etc is crucial for our oganization. It not only gives us a chance to get our organization's name out, but ithelps us to be better people through giving of ourselves and our precious time. Another important avenue for outreach is the community at large. Creating and executing demos to visiting students, as well as making visits off-campus excites younger students about science and engineering. I also hope to encourage participation in university outreach programs, outreach with other engineering organizations, and Greek organization philanthropies. I'm interested in putting together an annual event specific to UCMA related to a meaningful cause. Each of these endeavors brings out qualities such as leadership, communication, and teamwork with are essential for success in life.
