To promote among its members a self-sought increasing knowledge of metallurgy, ceramics, materials science and engineering and all its branches, to instill a professional pride in their chosen life work and to teach younger students pride in their scientific abilities as well as about STEM education.
The 2006-2007 academic year became a major turning point in the development of the UConn Material Advantage Student Chapter. From dramatically increasing student membership to increasing outreach activities beyond expectation to instituting new management techniques upon chapter leadership, this year has been productive, educational, and rewarding.

In previous years, the UCMA had
already proven itself as one of the
most successful chapters in the
nation. as well as one of the most
active professional engineering
societies at UConn. While it has
been very small in the past years
due to the relatively new Material
Science Undergraduate program
and a vast number of foreign
graduate students, this yaer seems
to have been the chapter's bloosoming.

The chapter's success has been measured by our national awards, which include the 2001 ASM/TMS Chapter of Excellence for Promotion in the Field Award, the 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 TMS World Materials Day Outreach Contest Awards and a 2006 ASM Materials Education Foundation grant.

This year was a big transition year for several reasons. With the exception of Amber, all previous offivers had graduated or stepped down, creating an entirely new executive committee. After two years as the faculty advisor, Dr. Ramamurthy Ramprasad also stepped down, handing the reins over to a new assistant professor, Dr. Rainer Hebert. As a whole we welcome Dr. Hebert and look forward to working closely with him to implement many new and exciting plans.
