Event Scheduled for Dec 9, 2011
Event: Computer Science & Engineering Colloquium -
Location: ITE 336
Time: 11:00 am
Details of Event:
The Systems Department at UTRC develops innovative technology solutions and concepts in the area of complex adaptive systems to provide growth and competitive advantage to UTC's businesses. We focus on solving problems related to designing, controlling and managing systems that are characterized by complex interactions between a large number of independent and heterogeneous components (and sub systems). The Departmentís core strengths and expertise are articulated along the following disciplines:
- Systems Dynamics & Optimization
- Controls Systems
- Power Electronics Systems
- Embedded Systems & Networks
- Decision Support & Machine Intelligence
This presentation will provide an overview of United Technology Research Center and will some of the methodologies developed in the Systems Department and their application to United Technologies business units applications. I will particularly emphasize the activities on building energy systems, microgrids and autonomous intelligent systems.
Isaac Cohen is Director of the Systems Department at United Technology Research Center (UTRC), and Director of the UTRC Europe, based in Cork, Ireland.
The Systems Department at UTRC develops expertise in controls, embedded systems, power electronics and decision support and optimization. He is also the Director of the recently created UTRC Europe, which objective is developing a unique portfolio of research projects for energy management and security systems in collaboration with global industry and academic partners.
Dr. Cohen received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at University of Paris Ė Dauphine, and was an active participant in the academic field of computer vision and video surveillance for over 15 years. He held academic positions at Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique (INRIA), France, and at the Computer Science Department at University of Southern California. In 2010, he joined UTRC from Honeywell Labs in Minneapolis, where he led the research group focusing on video surveillance, biometrics and cyber security. Dr. Cohen continues to be an editor of the ACM Reviews, and serves on many conferences program committees in the field of computer vision.
