Event: BME Seminar: Evolutionary Algorithms As A Tool For Metabolic Curation & Discovery At The Genome-Scale

Location: CB 202

Time: 03:00 pm

Details of Event:
The potential of biological systems as venues for chemical processing has been recognized for years. Significant progress has been made in harnessing these systems for the benefit of society, whether through biomedical breakthroughs or through the development of novel biomanufacturing processes. However, it has also become abundantly clear that the level of complexity involved in these biological systems is enormous. To maintain or accelerate the current rate of progress, new tools and strategies need to be developed that are capable of dealing with such complexity. Our group is addressing this challenge by developing and applying evolutionary algorithms to better make sense of these biological systems. Evolutionary algorithms are essentially a form of stochastic optimization based upon Darwinian principles. Using genetic algorithms, we have developed a new strategy for identifying missing reaction pathways in metabolic networks. As a result, it is possible to generate more robust metabolic models for engineering and optimization purposes. In this talk, I will discuss our recent genome-scale metabolic reconstruction of Mycoplasma gallisepticum.
