Harris L. Marcus is a Professor of Materials Science & Engineering and the Director of the Institute of Materials Science. He received his B.S. in Metallurgy in 1963 from Purdue University and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering in 1966 from Northwestern University. He had eight years of industrial research experience with Texas Instruments and the Rockwell Science Center. He spent 20 years at the University of Texas where he was a Named Professor of Mechanical Engineering/ Materials Science and Engineering. He is an active member in the TMS, ASTM, MRS and ACS societies and a Fellow of ASM. He received the Northwestern University Alumni Association Award of Merit as the 1988 Outstanding Alumnus of The College of Engineering and the Purdue Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award in 1994. His research areas and interests include fatigue and fracture of structural materials, materials science of surfaces and interfaces, materials processing, bio-nanotechnology, photonic crystals, forensic science, and solid freeform fabrication. He has co-written one book and co-edited 18 books and proceedings. He has 25 patents and published over 300 papers on a wide range of research topics.
