Capstone Design - Materials Science & Engineering
A culminating feature of the Materials Science & Engineering curriculum for senior-level students is the two-semester series of senior design project courses. In these courses, students work in teams with faculty and industry mentors to solve problems in selection of materials and design of products, with emphasis on improving process parameters. In this important capstone experience, students apply the materials expertise and engineering knowledge they've gained over the preceding years.
Examples of our past senior design projects include:
- Development of a Low-Cost, Light-Weight, High-Strength Roofing System
Morin Corporation, Bristol, CT
- Determination of Processing and Composition for Stable Sub-Micron Grains in Copper
Olin Corporation, Waterbury, CT
- Characterization of White Etch Layer in Machined Superalloy Components
Pratt & Whitney, East Hartford, CT
- Influence of Hot Isostatic Pressing on Fatigue of Recycled Aluminum
Bodycote International, Andover, MA
- Microstructural and Mechanical Characterization of Pseudoelastic Alloys
Memry Corporation, Bethel, CT
- Improved Processing of Stainless Sheet
Allegheny Rodney, Wallingford, CT
- Pulsed Laser Deposition of Ferroelectric Films
National Science Foundation, Arlington, VA
