Professor S. Pamir Alpay received his B.S. and M.S. from the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering of the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, and his Ph.D. from the Department of Materials Engineering of the University of Maryland. Dr. Alpay worked as a post-doctoral research associate at the University of Maryland for 1.5 years. He joined the faculty of the University of Connecticut in Oct. 2000 as an Assistant Professor. His work is mainly concentrated in the field of electronic and smart materials. Prof. Alpay's research interests are:

  • Microstructure-properties relations in ferroic materials.
  • Thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transformations in ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, and superconductor thin films and multilayer heterostructures.
  • Effect of internal stresses on the structural and physical properties of constrained films.
  • Smart materials: performance and reliability
  • Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) with ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, or ferroelastic active components.
  • Martensitic transformation and the shape memory effect in constrained thin films.
  • Thermodynamics and kinetics of misfit dislocations in epitaxial thin films.

Details of Dr. Alpay's research can be viewed in the Functional Materials Group Homepage.
