Event: BME Seminar: Micromechanics of Defective Erythrocytes in Sickle Cell Disease, Presented by George Lykotrafitis

Location: ROWE 320, Videoconferenced to UCHC-Low Learning Center

Time: 12:00 pm

Details of Event:
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is the most common inherited disorder worldwide that affects an estimated of 30 million persons with significant morbidity and mortality and it is the most common monogenetic disorder detected by newborn screening. The pathophysiology of sickle cell anemia is a consequence of the polymerization of sickle hemoglobin in red blood cells (RBCs) upon partial deoxygenation and the impaired flow of these cells in the microcirculation. Despite the characterization of the disease as the first “molecular” disease 60 years ago and 30 years of analysis of globin genes, effective therapy remains elusive.
