“Improving Water Management under Climate Variability and Change” Presented by Dr. Christine Kirchhoff, Ph.D., A Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI (Water Resources Management Faculty Candidate)

Abstract:
At its core, my research seeks to advance our practical and normative understanding about how we manage water resources to be resilient to climate variability and change. I approach the problem from two avenues, one that draws heavily on theories and methods employed in the social studies of science, technology and policy and the other that draws from the much broader arena of coupled human-environmental systems. In this presentation, I highlight my research in these two areas focusing first on an exhaustive mixed method study of water managers and their use of climate information in two regions of the US. Next, I highlight ongoing work examining water resource management and governance both at the level of US states’ and at the local and watershed scales of decision making. Finally, I present future work including projects aimed at 1) advancing the theory and practice of how to broaden climate information uptake, 2) improving the capacity of water managers to employ more resilient management approaches, and 3) increasing the efficiency of Great Lakes restoration efforts by linking governance capacity to restoration need, to identify both opportunities for and challenges to restoration.
