This lecture will focus on projects that are progressing in the Capitol Region of Connecticut, including CTfastrak (the New Britain Hartford Busway) and the New Haven Hartford Springfield commuter rail project. We will explore basic principles of successful transit operations and how those principles play out in the Capitol region. Additionally, we will examine the role of bicycling and walking relative to transit success. Topics to be addressed:
• Transit modes and transit characteristics
• Demographic factors that influence transit use
• Equity – are we serving existing bus riders or trying to entice drivers out fo their cars
• How do the modes work together
BIOGRAPHY
Since graduating with a degree in civil engineering, Sandy Fry has spent most of her career working in transportation. Currently a Principal Transportation Planner with CRCOG, she manages the bicycle and pedestrian planning and transit planning programs for the agency. As a bicyclist and someone who enjoys a good walk, she has a keen interest in improving the safety of our transportation infrastructure for bicyclists and pedestrians. She has been recognized for her efforts in promoting biking to work (2006 Connecticut Climate Change Award) and is a frequent lecturer on transportation topics. She is an adjunct professor at the University of Hartford, teaching a transit planning class. She is a founding member of Bike Walk CT and is a League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructor. Nothing makes her happier than starting her day by biking to work!
