Course Description: Engineering normally deals with the abstract language of mathematics and logic to formulate concept and ideas that lead to decisions that produce a physical construct, process steps or procedures for accomplishing a complex task. In the course of their work, engineer’s process large volumes of detailed and at times complex information, come to some decision or conclusion and most importantly they pass on this acquired knowledge to others. This course is taught from a perspective of the interactions an engineer encounters in the course of actual practice, be it with work teams, colleagues, or lay people. This course is designed to enhance a student’s understanding of the fundamentals of good communications and how important this knowledge is in enhancing an engineer’s ability to be successful in today’s profession. The course is divided into three parts. The first part of this course focuses on the various types of written technical communications an engineer is apt to find in the engineering workplace. Writing skill and techniques will be studied, practiced and applied to workplace products. The second part will focus on personal communication styles and speech-craft. The third part will apply teambuilding and leadership skills, with an emphasis on communications.
