Welcome

Message from the Department Head

mehome (44K)We welcome you to the Mechanical Engineering website at the University of Connecticut showcasing our educational and research activities. Our department offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs at one of the best public universities in the Northeast. In this website, you will find information about our faculty, students, teaching and research activities as well as our outreach programs.

The mechanical engineering field today spans a broad spectrum of subjects including design and operation of novel energy conversion devices; sensors, sensor networks and process control; advanced materials development for and mechanics of nanoscale and biological systems, computer aided design of highly engineered systems to name a few.

The Mechanical Engineering faculty includes 25 tenured and tenure-track faculty members, three professors-in-residence, one lecturer and several faculty with research and joint appointments. Many of our faculty have been recipients of National Science Foundation CAREER, Office of Naval Research Young Investigator, Army Research Office Young Investigator and Presidential Young Investigator awards.

Our graduate program offers Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in a variety of research areas as well as an on-site Master of Engineering program through the United Technologies Corporation. Our graduate program centers around a large number of externally funded research programs. For a more complete description of the research areas, please visit the research section of this site.

Our undergraduate mechanical engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org. Our undergraduate students have opportunities to intern in companies and engage in research projects during their studies. All our seniors participate in industrially-sponsored design projects that allow them to experience a team work environment before they start their careers. Our graduates are highly sought out by industry and often receive multiple job offers before they have left the University.

We thank you for your interest in our program and hope you find our website informative. If you have any questions regarding our programs, please contact us.

Best Wishes,
