  • Flooding, hail, tornados and hurricanes. . .who can predict?

Accurately predicting severe weather hazards is objective of research conducted by Dr. Emmanouil Anagnostou. Using a combination of space- and ground-based sensing devices, paired with atmospheric and hydrologic models, he is developing state-of-the-art methods for the prediction of hazardous floods, flash floods, lightning and other extreme weather. Central to Dr. Anagnostou's research is a mobile observatory consisting of a network of highly precise instruments for hydro-meteorological data gathering, including a specialized device he designed - a mobile X-band Polarimetric On Wheels (XPOW). The XPOW unit is a specialized radar mounted on the back of a flatbed pickup truck that can be driven through stormy weather to collect data in real time, such as rain velocity and drop size. With funding from the National Science Foundation and NASA, Dr. Anagnostou is helping weather researchers around the globe better understand weather indicators that precede dangerous weather, and to predict foul weather before it hits.
