Our interdisciplinary course (CE320-04) will introduce students the principles of measurement science, sampling and monitoring network design, sensor technology and data-logging principles. The introductory section will be followed by weekly topical hands-on experiments using several modern in-situ measurements and monitoring methods including:

  • Surface hydro-geochemical processes (surface water quality sampling; stream flow);
  • Vadose zone and groundwater (soil water content and pressure, hydraulic conductivity, infiltration, well tests);
  • Climatic variables and air-quality sampling methods (temperature, relative humidity, radiation, wind speed, and air sampling);
  • Environmental and site characterization (soil sampling, Geoprobe, subsurface geophysics, remote sensing methods).
