Linux is a free, open
source, UNIX-type operating system, created by Linus Torvalds with the
help of developers and hobbyists all over the world.
ECS supports a customized automatic installation of Ubuntu Linux (currently Feisty 7.04),
also known as ECS Linux, on a specific set of hardware platforms.
ECS Linux has been tailored for integration with the computing
environment within the School of Engineering. It provides access to
specialty software, user home directories, and a fully kerberized
single-sign-on environment. ECS Linux is our recommended Linux solution
for general use within the school, and it is the only Linux solution
which we can fully support at this time. A technical
overview is available.
With the help of the Computer Science and Engineering Department, we
have deployed an ECS Linux Computing Lab in room C27 of the ITEB
building. This lab is open to all students in Computer Science
Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering Departments.
The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department is also bringing
online a Linux computing lab in C25 in the coming weeks.
ECS also maintains some software repositories available to the
University of Connecticut community. Included are a
Debian Mirror,
an Ubuntu
Mirror, a CPAN mirror, and
a cygwin
mirror. These repositories are available via web within the University,
but not outside. They are updated by a daily rsync schedule. More
information is available in our ECS Linux
Services page.
