Dr.
Bahram Javidi, Director

The Image Processing and Optical Computing laboratory of the University
of Connecticut offers Master's and PH.D. Programs on the following
subjects:
-
Image Processing:
Digital image processing, Neural networks, Image restoration, Medical image
processing, Filtering for noise removal.
-
Pattern Recognition:
Linear and nonlinear filtering techniques for pattern recognition. Both
optical and electronic implementations are under investigation.
-
Optical devices
and systems for information processing: Optical devices, such as spatial
light modulators, are used to implement optical information processing
systems.
-
Encryption:
Optical and digital techniques are used for encryption and security systems,
the laboratory has recently developed new optical coding techniques which
can be used in systems for security verification or detection of counterfeiting
of identity cards, credit cards, etc.
The major facilities of our Lab are:
-
1. State of The Art Optical Devices, Spatial Light Modulators, Liquid
Crystal Television Panels, Acousto-Optics Cells, CCD Detector arrays.
-
2. Optical Components, Optical Recording Materials, Lasers, Light
Sources, Optical Accessories, Optics Benches, Holographic Facilities.
-
3. Advanced SUN Computers, PCs, MACs, Advanced Computing, Imaging,
and Image Processing Software, Printers, Scanners, Networking Facilities.
-
4. Access to Fabrication Facilities.
A wide range of courses in Digital Signal Processing, Image processing,
Experimental Optics, Optical Information Processing, Communication Theory,
Nonlinear Systems Theory, and Optical Systems Engineering are offered in
the department.
Interested Master's students, Ph.D. students, post docs, and visiting
scholars are encouraged to contact Professor Javidi.
Subject to University approval, funding is available for outstanding
graduate students to pay for tuition and cost of living.
The University of Connecticut is 80 miles (120 km) from Boston and 150
miles (210 km) from New York City.
