University of Connecticut School of Engineering EAGLES: Engineers As Global Leaders for Energy Sustainability

Dave Butkiewicus

Dave is currently developing a piezoelectric energy harvester for human foot traffic, specifically in high-footfall areas where solar power is sparse (such as metro stations). A prototype is being refined and metro station foot traffic studied in order to generate the most amount of electricity for a given time period. The electricity generated by this "stomp box" can be used to power environmental sensors, radio communications, electronic informational signs, etc. He worked on the electromechanical modeling at Politecnico di Milano in the fall of 2013 and is finishing up his thesis project and taking classes in Madrid at the Universidad Polit├ęcnica de Madrid.
