Associated Center
The Institute of Material Science (IMS) at the University of Connecticut was established in 1965 by the Connecticut General Assembly as a state-of-the-art research center and charged to provide: (1) superior graduate research education in the interdisciplinary fields of materials science and engineering and (2) materials-related technical outreach to Connecticut industry. IMS has extensive facilities including laboratories in surface science, laser materials interactions, x-ray diffraction, electron optics including TEM, SEM, ESEM, biomaterials, solid freeform fabrication, nanomaterials optoelectronics, polymer rheology, polymer synthesis and processing, casting, mechanical testing, nuclear magnetic resonance, thermal analysis, GPC, infrared spectrometers and image analysis. Over 100 faculty members from 20 different departments are affiliated with IMS, including faculty from the Chemical Engineering Department.
