Materials are important to every aspect of engineering, making the study of materials an important part of creating many of the items used today. The materials science and engineering major is a mixture of science and engineering; you learn to examine and assess materials at different levels to determine their usefulness. You also learn to create new materials. This degree program is the only undergraduate materials engineering degree program offered by a public university in New England. With expertise in materials properties and processing, materials engineers play a crucial role in product design, from materials selection to design of manufacturing processes that yield an economical and reliable product.
