“Experimental approach using epitaxial films for fundamental understanding of ferroelectricity in HfO2-based ferroelectricity and their device application”

Abstract: After the ferroelectricity announcement of HfO2-based thin films in 2011, many researches have been reported due to their superior properties below 20 nm in thickness. The origin of the ferroelectricity is pointed out to be a metastable noncentrometric orthorhombic phase. However, almost all research was carried out using polycrystalline films that normally include paraelectric phase. We have successfully grown a single phase of epitaxial films using appropriate bottom layers and measured the ferroelectricity. In my presentation, experimentally obtained fundamental characteristics of HfO2-based ferroelectric thin films are compared with those of conventional ferroelectric materials having perovskite structure. Additionally mentioned is the application of the epitaxial film technology to the real devices.

Bio: Hiroshi Funakubo is a professor for the Department of Innovative and Engineered Materials, Tokyo Institute of Technology. He received his Ph.D. degree from Tokyo Institute of Technology. In 1989, he was an assistant professor in the Faculty of Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology. In 1997 and 2012, he was an associate professor and full professor of Tokyo Institute of Technology. He is now the Professor for the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, School of Materials and Chemical Technology, Tokyo Institute of Technology. He received the Richard M. Fulrath Award of The American Ceramic Society in 2008. He is the author of more than 600 original papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals and has given more than 55 invited presentations at international conferences.
Specific areas of interest include preparation and properties of dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric films.
