DEAN'S MESSAGE

Welcome to the School of Engineering at the University of Connecticut (UConn). During its 107-year history, the School of Engineering has played a vital role in the growth of technology in the region. The School of Engineering continues to offer a truly diverse academic learning environment, while continuing to build upon its national reputation for excellence in research and scholarship. As one of the leading engineering programs in the country, we continue to produce highly-trained graduates for the evolving technical workforce, contribute to research and scholarship in the critical areas of national need, and provide service to the profession and the community.

These are truly exciting times at UConn! We are in the midst of an impressive $2.3 billion campus revitalization that has provided state-of-art facilities for teaching and research. The School of Engineering is also poised to hire more than 25 faculty members this year. We are seeking scholars with international stature and reputation to grow our activities across all of our departments and interdisciplinary programs. An innovative program funded by the State of Connecticut and industry, the Eminent Faculty Initiative in Sustainable Energy will enable solutions to pressing problems of global proportions.

UConn Engineering offers 12 B.S. programs of study at the undergraduate level with options to select from five different minors. Providing small class sizes, ready access to talented faculty, and free tutoring, we are committed to the success of each and every student. We are also updating our curriculum to reflect the characteristics of creativity, innovation, and lifelong learning that embody the "Engineer of 2020" to enable our graduates to assume leadership roles. As a result of our dynamic programs, the quality of incoming undergraduate students continues to rise - the average SAT scores is now 1294. In 2007, 50 valedictorians and salutatorians were admitted to the School of Engineering.

The research enterprise of an institution serves as an important foundation of a rewarding graduate education. We have world-renowned faculty members who have secured UConn's leadership in emerging fields such as nanotechnology, energy and sustainable engineering, informatics, environmental remediation, and biologically-inspired engineering, to name a few. With an active research program funded by federal agencies and corporations, UConn offers Ph.D. and M.S. studies that are grounded in the intellectual merits and broader impacts that are central to the advancement of engineering science.

The foundation of an academic institution rests with the faculty and staff. Our faculty members have been recognized for their many contributions to research , scholarship, education , and service. These distinctions include membership in the National Academies of Engineering and Science, Fellow distinctions from professional organizations, 18 National Science Foundation CAREER awards, and countless other honors. It is through the creative energies and commitment of the faculty and staff that the School of Engineering will be elevated to new levels of excellence. Toward that end, we will continue to hire world-class faculty and staff, enhance our capabilities and resources for foundational and translational research in interdisciplinary areas, and offer an evolving and rigorous curriculum to attract and retain a new generation of top engineering students.

I thank you for visiting our website and invite you to visit all that the UConn School of Engineering has to offer.

Best regards,

Mun Choi
