Research and Centers
Centers and Institutes
Much of the research conducted within engineering takes place in dedicated research centers and institutes whose resources and equipment are uniquely adapted to a particular discipline. Engineering faculty, graduate students and undergraduates participate in advanced, multidisciplinary research with peers from other colleges and schools across campus within primarily the following centers and institutes.
Engineering & Interdisciplinary Centers
Bioinformatics & Biocomputing Institute – BIBCI unites unique resources, world-class researchers and visionary leadership for the advancement of biomedical and biological research using advanced computing techniques.
Booth Engineering Center for Advanced Technology – BECAT provides the physical and intellectual environment needed to advance computationally- and communications-intensive research in order to meet the Information Technology challenges of the future.
Center for Clean Energy Engineering – formerly the Connecticut Global Fuel Cell Center, C2E2 is a nexus for activities involving fundamental and applied research in clean and efficient energy systems – from energy conversion, to fuels, to power management – as well as training 21st century scientists and engineers.
Center for Environmental Science and Engineering – CESE leads and promotes multidisciplinary research, education and outreach in environmental sciences, engineering, policy, and sustainability. CESE provides infrastructural support to the faculty, supports graduate education, and acts as a collaboratory and synthesis center for multidisciplinary research and graduate education.
Center for Resilient Transportation Infrastructure – CRTI is a National Transportation Security Center of Excellence focusing on development of new technologies to protect the nation's multi-modal transportation infrastructure, and education and training programs for transportation employees and professionals.
Center for Transportation & Livable Systems – CTLS is a University Transportation Center funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Activities pivot on the theme “sustainable and livable transportation systems for smart growth.”
Connecticut Transportation Institute – CTI serves as a research, education and outreach center focusing on context sensitive design, land use/transportation interaction, transportation safety and multi-modal planning. Units within CTI are the Technology Transfer (T2) Center, Connecticut Advanced Pavement Laboratory (CAP Lab) and Connecticut Cooperative Highway Research Program (CCHRP).
Institute of Materials Science – maintains an outstanding advanced materials research center, provides superior graduate research education in the interdisciplinary fields of materials science and engineering, and provides materials-related technical outreach to Connecticut's industries.
Center for Hardware Assurance, Security and Engineering (CHASE) -- formed in 2012 to bring together commercial, academic and government expertise to enhance the nation’s hardware assurance and security.
Center for Information Assurance and Computer Systems Security (CIACSS) -- a collaboration between the School of Engineering and the School of Business, CIACSS is open to UConn researchers and is the primary research home for all areas of information assurance, with a focus on five main areas of research: Authorization and Access Control; Cryptography and Cryptanalysis; Data Security and Privacy; Information Fusion and Data Mining for Homeland Security; and Trustable Computing Systems
