Coverage of the text for the exam stops on p. 702, prior to Example 12.1. I did not collect or grade the HW assigned for p. 715 and that detailed material will NOT be on the exam. You are allowed to bring the 3 'help' sheets, of dimensions up to 8.5 x 11 in, permitted for the 3 previous tests. Let S be the set of all real numbers in the interval (0,1) whose decimal expansions are infinite, non-terminating and contain only 3 or 4, for example, 0.343434 ..... or 0.333333 .... but not 0.340000 (both because it terminates and contains a digit not equal to 3 or 4). Prove that S is uncountable. 2. Let S be the set of all real numbers in the interval (0,1) whose decimal expansions involve only 0 or 1. Prove that S is uncountable. ********************************************************************* Class of 2/16/06: It will be virtual and web-based, using the points discussed, below. There is no need to physically attend at the normal classroom and I will NOT be present at the regularly scheduled class time. ********************************************************************* I. Exercises for discussion in class on Tues, 2/21/06: Do p. 112, Sec. 2.3, #6e to finish off diagonalization argument. Also, p. 125, do 6, 7, 9. Also, show that if A is infinite and B is a subset of A, then |B| is less than or equal to |A|. Is there a 1-1 onto function from R to (0,1)? If so, what is it? If not, why not? ********************************************************************* II. Study for Test scheduled for Thursday, 2/23/06. Come to class on Tues, 2/21/06 with questions to prepare for test. Test will be on the following: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 1.3, 1.4, 2.1 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 2.3, 2.4 3.1, 3.2, 3.3 4.1, 4.2 ********************************************************************* III. Need to resolve new administrative policy about HW. My default view (as expressed in class on 2/14/06) says 1. You must do HW for every class to learn this material. 2. No more excuses, this is administratively too taxing. If it's not there at the beginning of class, then it's a zero. 3. Everyone gets four free passes for the term. I has said before there was two. If you already used two, you get two more from here. If you have used none, you still have 4 to use. There are other variants, but you get the idea. Homework After Spring Break p. 229; 1bd, 2bd, 3bd, 4b & p. 267 1, 2 (due Thurs, 3/16/06) Due 3/28/06, Big-Oh HW, as posted on home page. Due 4/6/06, 10.1, p. 570 - 571, #1-6.
